Nestled in downtown Bartow we came across this fantastic museum of Polk county. The actual building served as a courthouse, and was established in 1908 which is over 100 years ago. You can certainly tell they do not make buildings the way they used to. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece including the beautiful mosaic floors inside and the structure of the place.

Inside you will find the history of Polk County from beginning to present. The museum contains many exhibits including a tribute to the Detroit Tigers who play their spring training games locally which I really enjoyed. They have both ongoing and temporary exhibits so check with them on what you will see. Ongoing exhibitions feature artifacts on display that include:

  • Miocene Fossils
  • Paleo Era dugout canoe
  • Pioneer clothing and tools
  • Vintage farm and mining equipment
  • Artisan fishing lures
  • Military relics

The best part of this place is it is absolutely free. You can spend hours in here reading about history and seeing ancient artifacts that pertain to Polk county. A very enjoyable experience. The genealogy library here can also take up a lot of time looking to see some history of your own family.
